Summary of projects for DBS
An outline of the ongoing and planned projects in which DBS is engaged is given below. There are 11 projects that DBS is currently working with 5 stakeholders: CDF, Beams/Technical Division, CMS, D0, Minos. There has been an additional request from BTeV for manpower later in the year, but the details are not yet defined.
| Runjob (a.k.a. Shahkar) | |
| The Shahkar project is managed by Greg Graham (CMS), Eric Wicklund in DBS has been assigned to work with the project to develop a common code base that will be used by both CMS and D0, and potentially other customers as they emerge. Code, test procedures, and documentation have been provided to date. The project will continue to integrate CMS and D0 in the coming months and incorporate new features from each experiment which can be shared. | |
| FroNtier | |
| The FroNtier project is currently a pilot exploring the use of Grid Services to deliver readonly database information to clients. It employs the experience gained in the DAN project to provide modular, adaptable, multi-tier architecture for CDF and future experiment need. The DBS group is working closely with SLD and CDF to establish and test design concepts and establish a project plan that will build a usable system in the coming months. | |
| Common Monitoring | |
| The common monitoring project has build an infrastructure which is used by CDF and D0 to monitor their database activity. It consists of a collector (for CDF) or middle tier server (for D0) which produce XML-like formatted statistics information. This information is parsed and loaded into a mySQL database. The database schema is similar for the two experiments, but also has elements specific to each experiment. A histogramming and plotting utilities have been provided using JAIDA and JfreeChart respectively. Cron jobs run daily for CDF, and 6 times a day for D0 and produce web based plots needed for monitoring and debugging the system. Work remaining includes 1. providing statistics for the SAM db servers, 2. summary information for historical tracking, 3. final productizing for long term maintanence. | |
| Monitoring second generation (w/ dynamic content pages) | |
| Dynamic web pages will be built using jsp or php technology to improve the accessibility to the information in the monitoring databases. | |
| SamGrid monitoring | |
| Building on the tools developed for the common monitoring, we plan to provide a monitoring infrastructure for SAMGrid. JIM provides an XMLDB at each site which has a tomcat server that can be accessed via xml-rpc. Through this mechanism, a client will be built that will periodically gather information form all sites, and record it into a central mySQL database. This information will be plotted and the plots published to the web. Additional effort might be spent exploring monitoring tools used in Grid3 project, such as MonALISA, if time allows. | |
| Beams and Technical Division db evaluation and migration | |
| The BLASTMAN database coordinates, into a modern Sybase installation, data previously held in various Sybase and RIM databases. This information is Magnet alignment and parameter information which is needed for the accelerator. DBS participation includes establishing the database and preparing initial loading and basic access applications. | |
| CMS Detector databases | |
| The initial project includes understanding the CMS DB needs for the upcoming slice test and moving toward the ultimate needs of the experiment for the completed detector. The database applications include the 1) Construction, 2) detector equipment, 3) Configuration, and 4. Conditions (aka calibration). There are many sub detectors, the initial effort at FNAL includes work of an overall architecture for DB access, and specific work on Hadron Calorimeter (HCAL), End Muon (EMU), PIXEL, and Electromagnetic Calorimeter (ECAL) sub-detectors. An initial project plan is being produced. | |

| Ongoing contributions to the SAM project | |
| Minos Database Support | |
|
Support for Oracle repository at Fermilab,
and mysql to/from Oracle conversion.
Dennis has preliminary project outline. Additional work to establish production quality service ready for experiment running in late 2004. |
|
| BTeV Database Support | |
| Tasks still undefined, expect requests to start materializing by mid-year. Hope to leverage monitoring and Ntier work. | |
| Contributions to Enstore continuing development and support | |
| Continue some of Chih-Hao's previous commitments for development and support for ENSTORE project. Transition PostgreSQL databases to 24/7 operation in CSS/DSG group. | |
