Herwig is Monte Carlo event generator with emphasis on the detailed simulation of QCD parton showers, for jet fragmentation, particle decays, and e+e- annihilation.
To use the current version of Herwig, type "setup herwig". This command defines the environmental variables: Herwig_DIR, Herwig_SUD, and Herwig_SUDNEW.
Some modifications have been made to the code supplied by Bryan Webber. The size of the HEPEVT common block has been expanded from 2000 to 4000, for compatiblity with the StdHep package. The output of the program can be directed to a file with unit number LHWOUT (COMMON/HUWMSC/LHWOUT). The standard version of Herwig writes output to unit 6, which remains the default. Because Herwig uses double precision, the HEPEVT common block is named HEPEVTD.
Normally, Herwig computes the Sudakov table during the initialization process. However this is time consuming and you may wish to have Herwig read the values from a file instead. To produce the Sudakov file, set LWSUD to a positive value and define the logical name or environmental variable Herwig_SUDNEW. To read this file, set LRSUD to a positive value and define Herwig_SUD. The default value of each of these variables is herwig.sud.
Although Herwig uses the standard HEPEVT common block, some of the particle ID numbers differ from the standard PDG definitions. StdHep contains a translation program HWGHEP(MCONV), which converts Herwig output to the StdHep HEPEVT format. A C++ version of the translation program is available in HepPDT (distributed with CLHEP).
With Herwig 5.9, HWDCLE has been modified to work with QQ v9_2, as distributed at FNAL.
The dummy routines supplied with Herwig are in a separate library, herdum. However, in Herwig 5.8, the dummy routine for IUCOMP is separate since that routine is used by HBOOK.
